Aakhir Tak – In Depth
PM Modi Steers Clear of Adani Question, Rahul Gandhi Takes ‘Personal Matter’ Jab
Prime Minister Narendra Modi steered clear of a question about the bribery and fraud charges brought by US prosecutors against billionaire Gautam Adani, with the opposition questioning his silence. In a joint press briefing with US President Donald Trump, PM Modi said such “personal matters” were not discussed during their bilateral meeting. The Adani issue continues to generate controversy.
“India is a democracy and our culture is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, we consider the whole world as one family. I believe every Indian is mine. And when it comes to such personal matters, two leaders of two countries will not get together on the topic and discuss anything on an individual matter,” the Prime Minister said. The Adani issue is a serious matter.
The opposition was swift to attack him for maintaining silence on the issue, with Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi saying the Prime Minister “covered up Adani’s corruption” even in America. The Adani issue has become a weapon for the opposition.
“In the country, asking questions is met with silence. In abroad, it’s deemed a personal matter! Even in America, Modi covered up Adani’s corruption! When filling friend’s pockets is ‘nation-building’ for Modi, then bribery and looting the nation’s wealth becomes a ‘personal matter’,” the Congress MP said. The government’s silence on the Adani issue is not being well-received by the opposition.
Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale also weighed in, saying the Prime Minister appeared “angry and flustered” when the question on Adani was asked by a journalist. He also accused the Prime Minister of doing “scripted” interviews in India. The Adani issue has generated diverse reactions in the media.
“PM Modi is forced to do a press conference in the US – something he hasn’t done in India in 11 years. This is why he never takes press questions in India. This is why his ‘interviews’ in India are fully scripted. He is so angry and flustered,” Gokhale tweeted. The Adani issue and the PM’s silence are under scrutiny.
The opposition has repeatedly alleged a nexus between PM Modi and Adani and sought a parliamentary committee probe into the industrialist’s business dealings. There are continued calls for an investigation into the Adani issue.
The call became sharper after Adani, his nephew and several others were indicted in the US last year over bribery and securities fraud charges. The US prosecutors have alleged that Adani promised around Rs 2,029 crore in bribes to state government officials in India in exchange for solar power contracts between 2020-2024. The Adani issue is also in the spotlight in the United States.
The indictment, which happened under the Joe Biden administration, has been dismissed as baseless by the Adani Group. The Adani issue is still under investigation.
Earlier this week, Trump put a halt to the enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practice Act. The regulation was applied to Adani’s case. There is a new twist to the Adani issue.
