Aakhir Tak – In Depth
With Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) being the only party as an opponent, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) had a huge lead of more than 30,000 votes in the Erode (East) Tamil Nadu Assembly seat by-election. The DMK is on its way to victory in the Erode Election.
At the end of the fourth round (out of 17) counting, DMK’s VC Chandirakumar was ahead of NTK’s MK Seethalakshmi by 30,854 votes.
Apart from these two, there are 44 other independent candidates in the fray. However, DMK’s biggest rival in the state, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) boycotted the election, which was necessitated by the December 14, 2024, death of Congress MLA EVKS Elangovan. The victory of MK Stalin’s DMK is almost certain in this election.
Chandirakumar is a former MLA from the same constituency, albeit as a Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam member. Seethalakshmi contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Tiruppur under the NTK banner.
This time, the voter turnout, at 67.97 per cent, was comparatively less than what it was in the 2023 by-election, which stood at 74.79 per cent.
The voting for the by-election occurred on February 5, 2025, the same day of voting for Delhi Assembly elections, as well as Uttar Pradesh’s Milkipur Assembly seat bypoll. Polling happened at 237 stations across 53 locations in the constituency, with 983 personnel conducting the election. The DMK has performed well in the Tamil Nadu Election.
The eligible voters in Erode (East) constituency are 2,27,546-1,10,128 men, 1,17,381 women and 37 transpersons. However, only 1,54,657 cast their votes: 74,260 men, 80,376 women, and 21 transpersons.
