The Supreme Court of India has directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to publish the full results of the NEET-UG 2024 examination on their official website. The directive includes publishing city-wise and centre-wise results while ensuring that the identity of the candidates remains masked. This decision came amid allegations of irregularities in the NEET-UG exam, prompting the court to seek transparency in the result declaration process.
Supreme Court’s Directive
The directive was issued by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwla and Manoj Misra. The court ordered the NTA to release the NEET-UG results by 12 pm on Saturday. The bench emphasized the need for masking the identities of the candidates to maintain privacy while ensuring transparency.
Chief Justice Chandrachud questioned the current practice of not publishing the full results and suggested using dummy roll numbers to maintain anonymity. This suggestion came in response to the Solicitor General’s argument that the entire results are personal property of the students.
Need for Transparency
Senior advocate Narendra Hooda, representing the petitioner, argued for the declaration of all students’ results to bring transparency to the process. The court recognized the concerns about potential irregularities, especially considering the admitted leak of question papers at Patna and Hazaribag. The court aimed to determine if the leak was confined to specific centers or if it was more widespread.
Chief Justice Chandrachud highlighted the students’ disadvantage due to the lack of access to their results and emphasized the importance of publishing the marks obtained by students while masking their identities. This approach ensures fairness and transparency in the examination process.
Court’s Concerns and Next Steps
The Supreme Court expressed its intent to monitor the situation closely and continued the hearing on alleged irregularities for the following Monday. The court’s directive aims to address the issues of fairness and transparency in the examination system, ensuring that all students are treated equitably.
