Aakhir Tak – In Depth
In an exclusive conversation with India Today TV, Indian Ambassador Vinay Kumar revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with leaders of BRICS member states during the Kazan Summit. This 16th BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place under Russia’s chairmanship on October 22-23. Kumar emphasized that the summit will provide a vital platform to address global challenges such as economic cooperation, climate change, and international security.
When asked about potential meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian Deputy Speaker Masoud Pezeshkian, Kumar did not provide a definitive answer but mentioned that the agenda for additional bilateral talks is also in progress. “The Prime Minister’s bilateral meetings are being considered, and it is a work in progress. We will have to wait to see which ones will be finalized,” the Indian Ambassador to Russia stated.
This meeting comes amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, which has persisted for the past twenty months, as well as escalating conflict in the Middle East. Kumar emphasized India’s role as a strong advocate for peace and conflict resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.
“The issue has been discussed and spoken about. India has consistently held the view that the concerned parties need to engage and find resolution to the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. I cannot pre-judge what the leaders will talk about, but I won’t be surprised if this issue is also discussed,” Vinay Kumar said.
Regarding Indian citizens misled into fighting in Ukraine, Kumar mentioned, “PM Modi has himself spoken to President Putin several times on this issue. Most of the Indian citizens recruited in the Russian Army have been released. There are some pending cases, about 16-17 by our number, that we are pursuing. The issue is moving toward resolution.”
ABOUT BRICS SUMMIT
The BRICS grouping—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—has undergone significant expansion this year, welcoming new members such as Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia, and Egypt. As global power dynamics shift, the bloc is increasingly seen as an alternative to Western-led organizations like the EU, G7, and NATO.
“BRICS has a positive agenda, which is to promote economic cooperation between its member states and also promote multipolarity in the world order. The leaders are likely to discuss these agendas. The fact that so many countries are interested in partnering with BRICS or becoming members of BRICS shows the resonance of the BRICS agenda with other nations,” Vinay Kumar stated.
“BRICS, being a gathering of such important countries, certainly contributes to global prosperity, development, and cooperation,” he added.
