The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its first list of candidates for the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections. According to the list, Babulal Marandi will contest from Dhanwar, while Champai Soren is set to represent Saraikela. Other key names on the list include Sita Soren, who will contest from Jamtara, and Neera Yadav, who will stand from Kodarma. In Gandey, Muniya Devi will represent the BJP, while Tara Devi in Sindri, Apnarna Sengupta in Nirsa, Ragini Singh in Jharia, Geeta Balmuchu in Chaibasa, and Pushpa Devi Bhuiyan will contest from Chhatarpur.
The election for the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly will be conducted in two phases—on November 13 and 20. The vote counting will take place on November 23. On Friday, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) announced its seat-sharing formula. As per the agreement, BJP will contest 68 seats, All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) will contest 10 seats, Janata Dal (United) will contest 2 seats, and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will contest 1 seat.
In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, the JMM-led alliance secured 47 seats—30 for the JMM and 16 for Congress. BJP won 25 seats, JVM-P 3, AJSU 2, CPI-ML 1, NCP 1, and independent candidates secured 2 seats.
Currently, the Jharkhand Assembly has 74 members, with the JMM-led alliance holding 44 seats. Two JMM legislators, Nalin Soren and Joba Majhi, are now members of Parliament. Jama MLA Sita Soren resigned to run in the Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket.
