Harmanpreet Kaur Unhappy with T20 World Cup Run-Out Decision, Dead Ball Rule Under Scrutiny
During the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match between India and New Zealand, Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and her teammates were left disappointed with a controversial run-out decision. The confusion arose when Amelia Kerr was given a reprieve under the dead ball rule. Kerr was initially run out in the 14th over by a strong throw from Harmanpreet Kaur, but the umpires overturned the decision.
The Indian players, including Smriti Mandhana, expressed their displeasure and engaged in a heated discussion with on-field umpires Jacqueline Williams and Anna Harris. Head coach Amol Mazumdar also spoke with the fourth umpire regarding the matter.
The incident unfolded when Kerr attempted a single off Deepti Sharma. As she attempted a second run, New Zealand captain Sophie Devine stopped her midway, leading to Kerr being run out at the striker’s end by Richa Ghosh. However, the umpires called Kerr back, citing that the ball was already dead when the run-out occurred.
This decision caused a brief delay in the match, but play resumed soon after. Kerr was batting on 14 at the time of the controversy, but she was dismissed shortly after, scoring 13 runs off 22 balls. She was caught by Pooja Vastrakar off Renuka Singh’s bowling.
Commentator WV Raman mentioned that the ball was considered dead when the umpire handed Deepti Sharma her cap at the end of the over.
