Nasrallah Agreed to Ceasefire Before His Death in Israeli Strike: Lebanon Minister
Hassan Nasrallah, the Hezbollah chief killed in an Israeli airstrike last month, had agreed to a 21-day ceasefire with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before his death, according to Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib.
The ceasefire agreement came after discussions led by US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron during the UN General Assembly meeting. The ceasefire was proposed following Hezbollah’s accusations that Israel was responsible for explosions in their communication devices.
Lebanon’s Foreign Minister told CNN, “We consulted Hezbollah and agreed to a ceasefire. Lebanese House Speaker Nabih Berri consulted Hezbollah, and we informed the Americans and the French. We were told Netanyahu agreed to this, and we informed Hezbollah.”
White House advisor Amos Hochstein was scheduled to travel to Lebanon to negotiate the ceasefire. However, before this could happen, Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike on September 27 at Hezbollah’s headquarters in southern Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold.
A day before Nasrallah’s death, a joint statement from the US, France, Germany, the UAE, and others called for a 21-day ceasefire to prevent further escalation. Netanyahu, however, rejected the proposal, stating that Israel would continue to target Hezbollah positions.
Following Nasrallah’s death, Israel launched a limited ground offensive into Lebanon. Over 1,900 people have died, and 9,000 have been injured amid the ongoing cross-border fighting.
