Protests erupted again in Bangladesh on Monday as demonstrators demanded an increase in the age limit for government jobs from 31 to 35. The protests began in Dhaka, where participants attempted to march toward the residence of Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. Police used tear gas shells and rubber bullets to stop the protesters.
On Monday morning, the demonstrators gathered in front of the National Museum and started their march to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus’s official residence, Jamuna, on Minto Road. According to local media reports, the protesters ignored police restrictions on rallies and gatherings and attempted to occupy the premises. As the protest march advanced, police personnel deployed in the area tried to block the demonstrators, leading to clashes and scuffles between the two sides.
In an attempt to disperse the protesters, the police resorted to firing tear gas shells and rubber bullets. This is not the first time Bangladesh has seen protests demanding an increase in the age limit. During Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League-led regime, several such demonstrations occurred, but the government at the time rejected the demand.
Despite the formation of a new caretaker government following the political crisis two months ago, lawlessness is still evident across Bangladesh. In a separate incident also on Monday, a garment worker was shot dead, and 50 others were injured during violent clashes between the police and protesters in Ashulia, located on the outskirts of Dhaka.
The protesters, primarily garment workers, were demanding the administration clear their pending dues. However, the protest soon turned violent as demonstrators vandalized shops and police vehicles in the area. As a result, police opened fire on the protesters.
