White House national security spokesman John Kirby expressed concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East while asserting Israel’s right to defend its people and land. The United States stated on Sunday that it had bolstered its military presence following Israel’s ongoing operations against Hezbollah.
Kirby described the U.S. deployment as “robust,” although he did not provide specific details. He stated, “There is already a very robust military capability to defend ourselves and to help defend Israel.”
In a statement, the Pentagon confirmed that an aircraft carrier strike group and a Marine expeditionary unit had been ordered to continue operations in the eastern Mediterranean. These forces are backed by an “elevated presence” of warplanes.
Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder announced that the U.S. “will further reinforce our defensive air-support capabilities in the coming days.”
Kirby reiterated concerns about the widening conflict in the Middle East but emphasized Israel’s right to eliminate threats posed by Hezbollah. “We’ve been concerned, almost since the beginning of this conflict, about it broadening, widening, becoming a regional war,” Kirby remarked.
With the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other top figures, fears are growing that Israel may launch ground operations in Lebanon.
Despite the acute crisis atmosphere, Kirby stated that the U.S. had no immediate plans to evacuate its citizens from Lebanon, though he urged them to leave while they can.
He noted that it was too early to determine who would succeed Nasrallah in leadership after Israel’s airstrike in Beirut on Friday.
