Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina faces four additional murder cases, escalating legal challenges against her and her associates. The new cases, reported by state-run BSS news agency, involve allegations from multiple incidents, including the 2010 death of Abdur Rahim and recent protests.
The first case, filed on Sunday, accuses Hasina, 76, former Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGD) Director General Gen Aziz Ahmed, and 11 others in connection with Rahim’s death. Rahim, a deputy assistant director of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) at the time, died in jail custody on July 29, 2010. His son, Advocate Abdul Aziz, lodged the complaint with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Akteruzzaman.
A second case involves Hasina and 48 others, charged with the killing of a Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) student, Shaikh Ashabul Yeamin, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on July 18. Abdullah-Al Kabir, Yeamin’s uncle, filed this complaint with Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Saiful Islam.
The third case addresses the killing of a Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) product seller during recent protests. Mamunur Rashid, the victim Md Eusuf Sanowar’s brother-in-law, filed the complaint with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saddam Hossain. Prominent figures like Obaidul Quader, Anisul Huq, and Tajul Islam are accused alongside Hasina.
The fourth case involves the killing of an auto-rickshaw driver during recent protests. This complaint, filed by the victim’s relatives, adds to Hasina’s already extensive list of legal issues.
Currently, Hasina faces at least 53 legal cases, including 44 murder charges, seven for crimes against humanity and genocide, and others for abduction and attacks on opposition parties. Her resignation and subsequent flight to India on August 5 followed unprecedented student-led protests against her government’s controversial quota system. The interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took over, amidst widespread violence that has claimed over 600 lives.
