Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin sparked a thought-provoking debate at a mass wedding event, suggesting that newly-weds might soon need to have 16 children instead of acquiring 16 forms of wealth. This comment comes amid concerns over the 2026 census and delimitation process, which is expected to reshape India’s electoral map.
Traditionally, elders in Tamil Nadu blessed couples to attain 16 forms of wealth, which included assets like a cow, house, wife, children, and education. However, Stalin humorously hinted that the situation may soon demand that families actually consider raising 16 children, given the likely impact of delimitation on parliamentary constituencies. His remarks follow similar sentiments expressed by Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu, who advocated for larger families to maintain demographic balance.
In his address, Stalin also commended the state’s Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department, stating that true devotees appreciate the DMK government’s work in managing temples and streamlining resources. He criticized those who use religion as a cover to disrupt the government’s success in managing religious institutions.
